The importance of a reliable data centre

Social media and the rise and rise of companies like Facebook and Twitter are opening up a new world of opportunity. There is so much internet traffic now that a lot of experts are predicting traditional media services like television and print news to be obsolete in as little as twenty years. Certainly this is food for thought, but in order for the social channels and the rest of the internet to operate, it is important as a creative marketer to ensure your online business is housed on reliable servers with excellent speed and connectivity.

A recent article that appeared on the This Is Money website shows beyond doubt, just how invaluable investing in a secure space for your server is. Without a reliable centre for all your data needs, it is highly likely that your business will soon join the scrap heap of failed start ups (of which there are many). Telecity is one of the best known companies for providing its clients access to reliable and secure data centres. Facebook and the BBC both rank as two of the group’s most high profile customers and with good reason. Telecity houses its clients’ entire IT infrastructure purposely in the locations which not only provide security, but connectivity to all the best telecoms and distribution networks to name but a few.

As online marketing is now the most effective way of reaching customers globally for the best price, companies traditionally mired in the twentieth century are struggling to keep up. Facebook alone has demonstrated the sheer power of marketing itself through social networking, but it wouldn’t be able to reach half the audience it does without having access to the best networks, cloud hubs and telecoms channels. As the demand for effective web marketing increases, so too has the demand for more storage centres. It is virtually impossible for a successful online business to house all of its data internally. The storage space required is just not cost effective and there have been many companies that have fallen foul of unreliable in house systems. A lot of the burden, worry and maintenance costs are removed by investing in reliable off-site data centres.

When setting out to market your company online, do not underestimate the IT infrastructure required for your web presence to be secure, connected and successful. Without companies like Telecity, none of us would get very far in the 21st Century.

iphone addiction…

When the iphone, Blackberry, and Android enabled smarthphones came out into the market place, this new generation of go-anywhere-do-anything phones caused a serious flurry. And for good reason. When you consider that you can do pretty much anything you can do on a laptop on your mobile these days – aside from type long emails, although even that isn’t too tough with a Blackberry – you can see what the fuss is all about. Suddenly, almost overnight, business people have the power to communicate in ways which were unheard of a few years ago. Through this new medium, business has got swifter, easier, and smoother…

it’s become clear that it’s almost impossible to tell those who just use their mobiles a lot from those who are actually dangerously addicted apart

…But…and there’s always a but, isn’t there?

This time that but is a BIG but. It’s called mobile phone addiction and it’s probably something which affects at least one person you know.

Because we’re all on our phones all the time, it’s become clear that it’s almost impossible to tell those who just use their mobiles a lot from those who are actually dangerously addicted apart. I mean, how can you really tell? Answer: you can’t. The line is extremely blurry at best, and at worst you could argue that no such thing really exists after all.

The next question is: what can you do about it? (Especially difficult a question when you need to use your mobile for work purposes…) You’d ask yourself if you should go and see a qualified independent financial advisor if you were in bad debt with no escape, wouldn’t you? Yes, of course you would — that’d be considered perfectly normal and you probably wouldn’t even think twice about it. But in the case of mobile phones the issue is more tricky. Tricky because they’re so new that an addiction to them doesn’t actually have any kind of support as of yet. From the looks of things, that won’t happen for a while, or at least until mobile phone addiction actually becomes recognised as a legitimate thing.

What you can do, if you have a problem, is recognise it and start trying to wean yourself off your phone. This will be easier said than done to begin with, but like anything – giving up sugar, saying goodbye to those much-loved cigarettes – it’ll get easier to deal with in time.

Just don’t make the mistake of thinking you don’t have a problem. There’s a difference between owning your mobile phone and your mobile phone owning YOU.
